We only keep the last three stories live on the site, for copyright reasons.

This story is, perhaps, an unusual choice to highlight the work of a writer such as Lord Dunsany, who is better known for his fantasy writing and was an inspiration to many better known writers (to modern readers) such as Tolkien, Neil Gaiman, Arthur C Clarke, Michael Moorcock, Robert E Howard and H P Lovecraft, to name just a few. It is one of a few stories that Dunsany set entirely in the 'real' world, rather than the realm of fairy or imaginary lands. We include it here more as an easy teaser, a simple way into a a fascinating writer, who wrote with a rhythm and pattern to his prose that can occasionally grate while at the times can be fascinating and pleasant. It is said that he often composed on horseback, and the rhythm of his writing reflects the drumming of hooves, but that could well be a writer's story!
