I’m interested in the way people protect themselves against grief, and this story shows my protagonist doing just that, by inventing more palatable versions of what is going on in her life. Untidy, unruly female characters inhabit my stories. They often have big feet and a serious attitude to those who cross them. But they also conceal intense, burning love. This story uncovers some of that love, and the visceral pain that strikes when love is not returned. I enjoy writing about teenagers – their limited power to determine their own lives, and their struggles to contain the emotions that arrive like a double-decker bus along with puberty. I hope a reader will imagine a happier future for Wendy beyond the confines of my story. I do.
