I’ve been writing a series of short stories set in the same town in 1963. I chose that year because of the assassination of John. F. Kennedy. My granny kept pictures of John F and Jackie Kennedy on her living room wall and when he was assassinated it was like a death in the family. I remember it clearly although I was only nine at the time. Various characters feature in the stories and Kathleen’s is one of the most persistent voices that came to me. I began to write little scenarios in her voice, one a conflict with her mother that got out of hand, another where she’s fed up babysitting her siblings, and another where her gran dies. The three came together in this story along with the Kennedy link, which made for a bit of misunderstanding and humour.
